Land markets and land market policies

Our research on land markets and land market policies has among others tried to investigate the following research questions:

  • Are land markets good for the poor?
  • Do land markets lead to more efficient land use by transfering land to more efficient producers?
  • Are land rental markets better for the poor than land sales markets?
  • What have the effects been of past policies that have prohibited or restricted the functioning of land markets?
  • To what extent should land markets be regulated to enhance their contribution to efficiency, poverty reduction and equity?
  • Is there a need for land market regulation to ensure more sustainable land use?
  • Is there a need to regulate tenancy contracts to enhance efficiency and to protect the poor?
